Land is scarce in Singapore. Government is actively promoting cremation options for our Final Resting Place. The latest option provide is the Inland Scattering Facilities opened in 2021. The Garden of Peace is managed by NEA and allows families to scatter the remains of their loved ones back on land where we belong.
Burial option, however, is still available for those who wish to do so. There is charge of $315 for those whose religion mandate Burial. For those whose religion do not mandate Burial, there will be charges of $940. To address land scarcity issue in Singapore, the remains will be exhumed after a period of 15 years. This policy of 15 years is made after consulting with various religious leaders in Singapore.
For religion that mandate burial, remains to be relocated to a smaller plot of grave.
For religion that do not mandate burial, the remains will be cremated and stored in Government Managed Columbaria.
To further manage the land constraint, our government have employed the use of Crypt Burial System. Compared to our traditional burial, this system uses less space and can preserve the land condition of the burial site, extending the lifespan. Our burial site was originally enough to cater until 2046. With implementation of 15 years burial policy and use of Crypt Burial System, our land is expected to cater until 2130.
How does Crypt Burial System work?
Concrete slabs are erected into the ground. Each grave is partitioned by concrete which is called a crypt. Coffin is lowered into the crypt before covering the crypt with earth (soil and grass). Concrete lid with grass on top is then used to seal the crypt.
With the Crypt Burial System, each size of the crypt is standardized. Hence, maximising the limited landspace we have in Singapore.
Where is our Cemetery located?
Although cemeteries are located throughout Singapore, all new burials are designated to be at Choa Chu Kang Cemetery. Choa Chu Kang Cemetery have been marked as Cemetery Zone. Intended use for Cemetery, Crematorium and Columbarium.
Effective land planning and the implementation of the most land-efficient burial system are essential given Singapore’s limited land supply. The best way to conserve natural resources is through cremation. After cremation, the remains can be properly kept in urns and housed in columbaria. Nirvana is one of the well-known private columbarium operators in Singapore, providing bereavement services not just locally but also throughout South East Asia, securing its place as the biggest provider in the region.
