What happens when death occurs overseas?

Fear not, as our excellent Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Consular officers are stationed at Singapore Overseas Mission worldwide. They guide family members on the procedures to bring the deceased body of a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident back home.

The death must first be registered with the foreign authorities in the country where the death happened.
Then, get in touch with the nearest Singapore Overseas Mission or the MFA Duty Office at +65 6379 8800.

A coffin permit will be required to be applied locally in Singapore which can also be done on behalf by the Funeral Director at the office:

Port Health Office
4545 Jalan Bukit Merah
Singapore 159466
Tel: 6222 2585
Fax: 6222 8543

A letter of authorisation from the next-of-kin will be needed by the funeral director to apply for the coffin permit which cost $17.50. The permit to Bury/Cremate will be issued together at no extra charges.

All previous mentioned documents will be needed a the final step of Death Registration at ICA, Level 3, Singapore’s Registry of Births and Deaths:

  1. Death Certificate (an English-translated copy is required if it is in local languages) – From Foreign Authorities
  2. Coffin (Import/Export) permit – From Port Health Office
  3. Permit to Bury/Cremate – From Port Health Office issued with Coffin Permit
  4. Deceased’s Singapore IC, Passport, Citizenship Certificate (if any)
  5. Informant’s identification documents – Usually next-of-kin or Family Members

Especially with Pre-Planning done, family members will have time and space to grief without the worries of Lump sum of Financial Costs and Funeral arrangements.
